My research shows that George Beaney and his family (the spelling of their name varies) were living in Canterbury for the 1861 and 1881 censuses, where he worked as a sawyer. He is recorded as an ‘Inn Keeper’ in the Ash Parish register for the baptism of their daughter Elizabeth E Beaney at Ash in 1871.  *

My particular interest is in James Beaney (1828-91) the younger brother of George (1826-97). James had a rags to riches life story, rising from poverty to become a doctor with the Melbourne, Australian title of Honourable. He left a £10,000 bequest to build an Institute in Canterbury which opened in 1899 and houses our public library plus a museum. It is currently being refurbished and extended.  *
