According to the website: portcities.org.uk/london......
'The Town of Ramsgate pub on Wapping High Street. The first alehouse on the site was built in 1460. Formerly known as the Red Cow, it acquired its present name in 1688 to attract trade from the Kentish fishermen who used to land their catch at Wapping Old Stairs. The Inn has a famous association with Judge George Jeffreys. Following the flight abroad of James I I, Jeffreys attempted to follow him. Disguised as a seaman, he hid on board a vessel moored in the Thames but rashly came ashore for a drink in the Red Cow, an act that led to his recognition and arrest.' ; The Pub is later at 62 Wapping High Street after a renumbering exercise.

In 1881, the census listing states the Swan at this address, this is almost
certainly incorrect ; or as John states - 'In the 1881 census we believe
that someone at the time must have had "one too many" and got the pub's name
wrong. And the spelling of the residents names!!' **
