219 Harold Road, Hastings

I'm puzzled by this one and suspect it was probably an off licence and the fact that the licensees are described as Beer Retailers rather than Publicans, Licensed Victuallers, or Beer House Keepers would seem to suggest that this was the case.  It looks like it might have been a pub or beer house at some time, but it's in an area that has no pubs at all (strange for a Victorian housing estate) and no one has any recollection of there ever being a pub in this area other than the isolated Forester's Arms (now closed). It has been suggested that the lack of pubs in the area may be due to the activities of the Victorian Temperance Movement. ***
