STOCK AND BUTTSBURY

Pigot's Essex 1832-3 Trade Directory

STOCK is an inconsiderable village, in the parish of its name, and hundred of Chelmsford; situated on an eminence between Chelmsford and Billericay, six miles from the former and three from the latter town. In some parts of this parish the soil is gravelly, but towards the common it produces good crops of corn. The church, which is dedicated to All Saints, is a neat old edifice; here is also a chapel for dissenters, and a poorhouse. The number of inhabitants in this parish, according to the last census, was 619.

BUTTSBURY is a small village and parish, adjoining those of Stock and Margaretting. Part of the parish lies at a considerable distance from the high road, as does the church, which is small, and possesses nothing worthy of particular remark. The population, in 1831, amounted to 515 persons.

COACH. To CHELMSFORD, a coach, from the Kings's Head, every Friday morning at eleven.
