WEST TILBURY

WEST TILBURY is a parish with a station called Low Street, on the London, Midland and Scottish railway (London, Tilbury and Southend section), 4 miles east from Grays, 15 miles south east from Romford and 24 from London, in the South Eastern division of the county, Barstable hundred, Orsett rural district and petty sessional division, Grays county court district and in Orsett and Grays rural deanery, West Ham archdeaconry and Chelmsford diocese, The church of St. James is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, small north porch and an embattled western tower, erected in 1883, at a cost of £1,000, given by George R. Burness esq. it contains 5 bells, dating from 1621 to 1694, formerly in the old tower, and a modern clock; the second bell was recast in 1883: the church, restored in 1879-80, is said to have been despoiled in 1648 by the troopers of Lord Fairfax when on their way to the siege of Colchester, the edifice being, for the time, turned into a stable: the communion plate includes chalices presented in 1762 and 1797 by Mrs. Jane Harrison and the Rev. Sir A. Gordon bart, rector, who also presented a silver flagon in 1800: in the chancel are tablets to the memory of Sir Adam and Lady Gordon, who are buried near by: a lych-gate has been erected at the expense of G. R. Burness esq.: the church affords 150 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from 1546; burials, 1540; marriages, 1567. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £513, with 42 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1918 by the Rev. James Reuben Fellows, who is also vicar of East Tilbury. Archbishop Laud was rector of this place in the year 1615. A new village hall was erected in 1924. A mineral spring, famous for its medicinal properties, was discovered in 1727 by Mr. John Kellaway on lands belonging to the manor, and a well was made for it in 1734. The exors, of the late George R. Burness esq. who are lords of the manor, and Allen Charles Cole esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, peas and potatoes. The area is 1,861 acres of land and inland water, 232 of tidal water and 30 of foreshore; the population in 1931 was 444.
