My father was licensee of the above p/h from March 9th 1939 until March 9th 1948

My father was born in Dovercourt Essex on 4/2/1895 and died on 17/11/1975. He had served in the Armed Forces for 24 years  (The Royal Fusiliers rising to RQMS) , before eventually taking over the Plough. At the out break of war he joined the Civil Defence for Essex and was soon made up to Controller of North West Area Controller, working very close with the Armed Forces, Police and Ambulance Services whilst my mother 'held the fort' at the Plough.
The previous land lord, I believe was a Mr. Biddle , who lost the licence because he was caught selling alcohol after hours to the public, and was caught during a police raid.
In 1939 there was no running water, only water was from a garden pump, this continued for our first 9/12 months, there was also no electric, lighting was from 'tilley lamps, oil lamps and candles, there was no change to this until after the war, about 1950.

My parents was also the licenses of The Rose & Crown Maldon Essex from 1959 until 1968 when they both retired. They took over from Mr Williams? who emigrated to Australia after being there for only just over 2 years taking over from Jim Rivers family in 1955/6  ***
