Melvilles 1858 Directory of Kent.

IFIELD is a parish, and includes the greater part of Shinglewell, two miles south from Gravesend, and seven miles N.W. from Rochester. The church is a small neat building, and is dedicated to St. Margaret; the Rev. William Downes Johnstone, M.A., is the incumbent. There is no village near the church, the population being at Shinglewell, which in 1851 had 91 inhabitants. Northumberland Bottom and Clap Hill are one mile north.

POST-OFFICE. - Richard Barnard, Receiver, Shinglewell. Letters arrive from Gravesend.
The nearest Money Order Office is at Gravesend.
