My mother told me she was born at the New Inn, on lst November, 1883 .My grandparents were newly married when they moved in but moved after several years and the birth of a second daughter in Oct. 1885. My grandparents name did not appear on any of the lists held at the White Lion, or The Walnut Tree, but I feel that may be due to the fact that they were not owners, and possibly she was a paid employee. My grandmother learned the trade from her uncle George Hughes who was the publican at ‘Old England’’ in Hollingbourne. (also closed some time ago). The family then moved to ‘The White Lion’ in Dean Street where my grandmother was the ‘Beer keeper’. This is shown on the census 1891. I have visited ‘The White Lion’ several times over the years and lunched there. On my last visit it had just been bought by a couple about to get married who had obtained permission to change the premises to a private residence. I remember well that the owner (in the 1930's) stated that they had removed an old fireplace to find that there was about five fireplaces on top of each other, which, when removed, revealed the original inglenook which is still there today.  I believe it was called a Beerhouse as my mother said they never sold any spirits. ***
