ELMSTED is a parish and village five miles east of Wye station, 77
from London, nine east of Ashford, in the lathe of Shepway, Stanting hundred,
and Elham union, East Kent. The church is an old and handsome
building, dedicated to St. James, and containing various monuments, The
population, in 1851, was 500. Bodsom Green is one mile N.W.; Evington,
half a mile N.W.; Whatshall, or Watsall street, is half a mile south;
Bavins, Wigmoor Heath, and Podlinge, two miles N.E.; Dane, or Dean
Farm, Thongs, Dowells, Eding, and Sheepcote, one mile and a half N.W.;
Pitbottom, Meeksted, Six-mill House, and Limbridge Green, three quarters
of a mile east; Eastley Court, two miles N.E.; Ashenfield, Hassell street,
and Pitt street, two miles and a half N.W.
HASTINGLEIGH is an adjoining village and parish in Bircholt franchise,
East Ashford union. The church is very ancient, and is dedicated
to St. Mary. It is a rectory consolidated with the vicarage of Elmsted.
The Rev. Gostwyck Prideaux, B.A., is incumbent, and the population was,
in 1851, 219. Bember, half a mile S.E,; South Hill, half a mile S.W.;
Brown's Comer, one mile N.W.; Combe Farm, two miles N.W.; King
Mill Down, half a mile south.
