I have always believed that the pub was
originally created by amalgamating three cottages, as the third from the corner
in west street still had the stairs up the middle, and were much the same as the
two up two down terrace houses in the old Pembury street that have now been
pulled down. *
At 22 & 24 High Street west in 1874.
This pub is now called the Ypres Tavern. **

My father Arthur F Wallington took over as Licensee in mid 1938. I have
known for a long time that my grandmother (widow) of Jack Knight had the
Fleur De Lis, in Gillingham; my
Uncle was at the Black Moors
Head in Rochester & then the Royal Oak in Chestnut Street.
But, recently discovered is that my great great great grandfather had the
Coach & Horses in London Road
Strood, and my g,g,g, grandfather’s brother had the
Rochester Castle in
Corporation Street. *
