The 'charabang' is a very early coach used for 'beanos' to the coast or country as a pub day out (a forerunner of the only fools & horses jolly boys outing!). The women are in their Edwardian Sunday best, the other most have 'bakers' style hats on. The charabang is plated to a maximum of 12mph, they must have left early for Ramsgate!!!! **

The Horse Shoe, Grange Road, Bermondsey, was at one time run by my great great great grandfather Daniel Macord who had previously been a carpenter. His name appears as the landlord in the Sun Insurance files on a policy dated 21 September 1826 and he was still in charge when he died at the end of 1834/early 1835; his will dated 16 December 1834 was proved on 14 February 1835. The youngest of his four daughters, Lydia, was born at the Horse Shoe in 1828. Unfortunately the will doesn't say much about the pub itself although it lists all his silver spoons and jugs etc and describes it as a 'victualling house' which I take to be a restaurant as much as a place for drinking. He seems to have owned and rented out quite a lot of other property in the neighbourhood as well. ***
