John Pidgeon was born in 1858 at Ashburton, Devon. As a young lad he worked as a farmer’s labourer, but later became a tanner’s labourer. In 1884 he married Rosina Jane Farleigh, and they immediately left Devon and came to London. They initially lived at the Roebuck in Brady Street, Whitechapel which was run by John’s sister Charlotte and her husband William Bennett. *
