Given that I have evidence that George Needham was certainly a licensed victualler and was born in 1796 in Bethnal Green I am now certain, thanks to you, that my great great great grandfather, George Needham, was the publican of the Hare in 1848, and the Norfolk Arms in 1843. He would have been 52 at the time. He would not show up at the Hare in the 1851 census because he was visiting his son Joseph at the "Prince of Wales", Buxton Street, Mile End. This would be about a fifteen minute walk from the Hare in North Bethnal Green. Also he was retired by the 1861 census and living in Leyton and would have left the Hare by this time. *

Charles Alfred James Yeo, licensee of the Hare, Cambridge Heath Road, Bethnal Green, has been associated with Truman's for 42 years. On September 18th, 1907, he became the landlord of the Black Horse, Abbey Street (now Buckfast Street) when he was 21 years of age, one of the youngest ever to hold a licence.

After service with the R.A.S.C. in the 1914 - 18 War, during which time Mrs Yeo gallantly carried on, Mr Yeo returned to the Black Horse and stayed there until 1928, when he moved to his present house, the Hare.

It was difficult to persuade Mr Yeo to talk about his life, although he did admit to a keen interest in sport during his early years.

Mr and Mrs Yeo have been happily married for over forty years and, having met them both, it is easy to understand the reason for their happiness; they are two very pleasant and human people. ***

Apologies for the delay in updates at present, but I suffer from BT Infinity. BT Infinity appear to have a severe shortage of trained engineers, hence my broadband not working for nearly a week, so far. The BT engineer has purportedly fixed the problem, and not bothered to visit. I apologise reservedly for the total lack of care by BT Infinity in this matter of NOT fixing my broadband. Have you tried Virgin broadband, allegedly faster according to Ofcom. I do not think that BT care, but I do!
