George Garland was born in Kingsdon, Somerset in 1818; he married Margaret Macleay at St Pancras, Camden in 1848. At the time of their marriage the two were both working as house servants in the household of Jonathon and Mary Rashleigh at 3 Cumberland Terrace, St Pancras. They continued working there until at least 1851, but in 1861 George was the Licensee ("Licensed Victualler") of the Bee Hive Public House on the corner of Waterloo Place and Cobourg Rd, Camberwell. In 1871 George was still a Licensed Victualler, now at 5 Grosvenor Place, Camberwell (which seems to be private residence).
George died soon after in 1873 at age 55. The couple had only 3 children between 1855 and 1860. Elder son Thomas Garland moved into the wine and sprit business, but perhaps not as licensee of a pub. ***
