The licensee of this Public House in 1830 (a relative
of Elizabeth Dunn's second husband) can be found on the Old Bailey website
(JOSEPH PIKE, theft : simple grand larceny, 6th January, 1831. “The
Proceedings of the Old Bailey Ref: t18310106-25”). JOSEPH PIKE age 57 was
indicted for stealing, on the 30th of December 1830, two candlesticks, value
five shillings - the goods of William Bawcomb and confined for 3 months. The
transcript begins:
"WILLIAM BAWCOMB. I keep the Duke of Wellington public-house, in
Crawford-street, Marylebone. On the 30th of December I was in my cellar, and
heard a bundle thrown down the stairs, and some one coming down, which
caused my suspicion; I put my light behind a cask, listened, and heard a
person go into the kitchen -I went to the kitchen door, and saw the prisoner
coming out with a pair of brass candlesticks, one in each hand; I collared
him, and said, "You rascal, what do you do here?" *

I am a distant relative of Henry Heath who claimed on his marriage
certificate that he was the son of “John Heath, Publican”, and for a bunch
of reasons I think the connection is to John Heath, Duke of Wellington,
Crawford Street, Marylebone. We have a documented connection to Henry (we
can see him emigrating to Australia in 1852) and have copies of his 11 Jan,
1846 UK marriage certificate.
The 1841 census show John (50) with Mary (20) and John (15) in Crawford
Street, Marylebone; the 1851 Census shows Henry (33) Mary Ann (33) Emma (4
born Clerkenwell 1847) and Caroline (2 born Southampton 1845) all in Bridge
Road, Southampton. *****

The Duke of Wellington has now re-opened under new management as a
gastro-pub/pub with a dining room upstairs. The owners are now Jamie Prudom
(of Pig's Ear, Chelsea, Brown Dog, Barnes), Alan Lempriere (of Brown Dog,
Barnes, also developer) and HIliary Fairhurst (also of the Brown Dog). It
has won several accolades for it's cooking, the Times Newspaper, on Sunday
23rd March 2008, stated that 'the Duke' is the best gastropub in the South
East [of England]. **
