Thomas Homes is my great great uncle. He is landlord of The
Duke of Cambridge, 25 Felix Street, London, in 1881-1891
(where there is a picture of Thomas Holmes). His first wife was
Eleanor. He was also landlord of the Angel and Trumpet,
Stepney High Street by 1899, with his second wife Ellen. *

My g grandfather, Allan George (Bob) Carter was a publican and had the
Walnut Tree and later the Angel and Trumpet in Stepney, Middlesex.
There is a
picture of him and his two sons on a day trip to a pub, which appears to be
at the Headley Arms, as the name of the landlord appears to be James R Clifton
(name over the door and on the bench).
We have a long family connection with the trade. My gggg grandfather,
William Carter, was an Ostler at a pub in Wickford, Essex between about 1810
and 1850. ***

1934 - Stepney Licensee's Funeral
A large number of friends gathered outside "The Angel and Trumpet", High Street, Stepney, on Thursday afternoon to watch the funeral of Mr Allan
George ("Bob") Carter, who had been its popular licensee for over 12 years.
Previously, Mr Carter had been the licensee of "The Walnut Tree", in
Stepney, and had been associated with the licensing trade for more than 20
years. His death which occurred on the 19th instance, at the age of 53, is
deeply regretted by a wide circle of friends. The interment took place at
the City of London Cemetery, Ilford. Among those present were:
Mrs A G Carter (widow), Mr and Mrs Charles Carter and Mr and Mrs Walter
Carter (sons and daughters in law), Mr and Mrs Golding, Miss Nellie Carter
and Mr and Mrs Len Williams (nieces and nephews), Mrs A Townsend, Mrs S
Oliver, Mr W Cooksley (Crown Hotel, Raleigh),
Mr and Mrs J Botfield (Beaumont Arms, Stepney), Mr G Botfield, Mr J Chapman
("King Harry", Mile End), Mr R Hedger ("Crown and Dolphin", Stepney), Mr H
Brown ("Royal Oak", Stepney) and numerous other friends and tradesmen.

Mrs Botfield was licensee at the Bay Tree Arms in Bethnal Green (1934) and later the Beaumont Arms in Stepney (1934 - 44).
