In 1878 my great, great, great grandfather Thomas Roberts ran a pub called the Gloucester Arms, No 1 Alvey Street, Walworth, London. He appears on the March 1878 ratebooks, and he also appears on an 1879 London Directory, which would have been printed late the year before as he gave up the beer house in October 1878. The beer house changed hands when it was run by a Joseph Humphreys. In an 1880 Directory a Mr Payne was running it. In 1881 it was being redecorated. ***
The name Gloucester Arms comes from a poor law document as when the Roberts gave up the beer house, they moved to Holborn and applied for poor relief which gave their last addresses in the past 12 months.  ***
