Prince Regent, 8 St George Street, London E1 - circa 1895

Prince Regent, 8 St George Street, London E1 - circa 1895

Kindly provided by Michael Larsen

The Prince Regent, which was at No. 8., is on the right with the overhanging lamp and J. Nelson's name over the facade [ listed in 1895 as the licensee]. This may be the one and only surviving photograph of this Pub. The Pub on the left of the Photograph, with the flag and the Pub lamp is possibly The Cock and Neptune at the entrance to Neptune Street. The Cock and Neptune was a pub on the ground floor, and a lodging house on the first floor (with a separate entrance).  ***

As a matter of unconnected interest, the man with a beard and holding his hat in his right hand on the left, is John Hamlyn, the proprietor of the wild animal shop with hanging birdcage behind him (No. 221). He was the "inventor" of the chimpanzees' tea party, and was a supplier of animals to zoos - like Charles Jamrach at No. 179 / 180.   ***
