1802/John Evans / Victualler/../../Sun Fire Office records held at Guildhall Library **

My great, great, great grandfather is James Samways, and his son, Joseph Samways. I do know that Joseph was married to Hannah Collie and they had 9 children, although 2 of them died aged just 1. Of the other 4 boys and 3 girls most, if not all, of them attended private schools away from home which surprised me, as I would not have expected a pub landlord to be able to afford private education for his children and it would have been much more unusual for girls in the mid 1800s to have a private education than it is now. However, Joseph died in December 1859 and his wife Hannah's entry in the 1861 census has her occupation as "fund holder". In 1871, the eldest son, also a Joseph, is 32, married with a young child, and his occupation is "traveller", which all suggests there was a reasonable amount of money around.  ***
