Dave Robinson, who lives no more than 200 yards from the site of the Golden Lion, is the gggg grandson of Mary & Thomas Bruin and sent me this information about the family:
In 1815 Mary Cartledge married Thomas Bruin in St Sepulchres in London. Thomas and Mary Bruin had at least 6 children including Amelia Caroline, born 1816, Eliza born 1825, Charles born 1827, Walter born 1832 and William born 1829. The 1841 census indicates that the Bruin family lived at White Hart Yard in St John Street near Charterhouse Square in Clerkenwell. It seems that Thomas possibly worked in the White Hart Inn. By 1851 Mary Bruin is widowed and an Inn Keeper of the Golden Lion Inn in St John St. The local street directory of 1847, 1854 and 1859 record Mary Bruin at the Golden Lion Inn. In 1861 Mary Bruin, 65, had retired and is described as a fundholder, and lived with her sister Martha Cartledge, house proprietor, and son William unmarried at 6 Spencer St in Finsbury. William was born in St Neots and is a Commercial clerk in the railway. **

Mary Bruin died in 1867
