Westminster St Margaret index
This pub stood on the south side of York Street, at the western end, and next to Van Dun’s Almshouses, also called the “Red Lion Almshouses”, separated from them by a stable yard, called the Coach and Horses Yard in the 1841 Census, but Red Lyon Yard on Rocque’s map of 1845. It dated from at least 1726, and was closed in 1909. *

Mr Cawse already held a license for another house, and the bench objected
that they did not allow one man to hold two licenses, so he undertook to
transfer this one to someone else at the next session. From a court case at
the Old Bailey on 8th May 1854, we learn that Mr Cord (sic) was also
landlord of the Duke of Bridgewater (in St Luke’s, London) and lived there,
but that a George Phillips ran the Coach and Horses for him.
