Green Coat Boy, 2 Coburg Row, St Margaret, Westminster

Westminster St Margaret index

At Artillery Row in 1851 and up until 1881; listed at Green Coat Cottages up to 1884. I am reasonably convinced that all the following refer to the same pub, the one now on Greencoat Place (called Coburg Row until some time between 1908 and 1938) and featured here, though no doubt the building was altered quite a bit over the years. It was presumably named after the Green Coat School, or St Margaret’s Hospital, which stood next door to the old Tothill Fields Bridewell (see 1802 record). The little stub of an alley on the north side of the pub used to lead through to the school, and was called “Greencoat cottages” on Stanford’s 1862 map. In spite of the wide variety of addresses, I think the site remained almost the same: streets just came and went and got renamed all round it! The 1878 OS map has it one house away from the corner, so it could have moved 10 metres to the east in the last re-build. *

BOOTHBY James, late of Strutton's-grounds, Westminster, grocer, and also of the house known by the sign of the Green Coat Boy, Tothill-fields, Brewers'-green, Westminster, victualler (but now a prisoner in His Majesty's prison of the Fleet), dealer and chapman … [London Gazette Issue 19271, 19 May 1835. (page 971)]

This reference provides another named landlord, but not a date when he was in occupation: the date 27th January 1835 is the date when Mr Boothby was declared bankrupt, so presumably he was landlord somewhat earlier, in 1834, probably.

Her husband is down as licensee in the 1881 census, but she features in all subsequent records. Did he die sometime in 1881 and she take over? In every record after this, Enna Flury is given as Licensee, EXCEPT the Censuses of 1891 and 1901, when her husband is the Licensed Victualler. I cannot imagine how this worked! *

Apologies for the delay in updates at present, but I suffer from BT Infinity. BT Infinity appear to have a severe shortage of trained engineers, hence my broadband not working for nearly a week, so far. The BT engineer has purportedly fixed the problem, and not bothered to visit. I apologise reservedly for the total lack of care by BT Infinity in this matter of NOT fixing my broadband. Have you tried Virgin broadband, allegedly faster according to Ofcom. I do not think that BT care, but I do!
