Westminster St Margaret index

This was one of the oldest establishments in Knightsbridge, and is reputed to have been used as quarters by Cromwell’s troops. In 1843 directory the it is named the 'Oliver Cromwell'. Together with the adjoining houses, it was pulled down and rebuilt on a much larger scale in 1874-5, when it became the Rose and Crown Coffee Palace. It later became a temperance hotel. ***

26th June 1852. Mr JW Dolman, a Jermyn Street solicitor had put Alexander Grant, a labourer, into the house to retain it for him. Three other labourers, who came to the house asking for some keys belonging to Mr Kennedy, the late tenant, were refused and Mr Dolman charged them with breaking and entering, according to a court case reported in The Morning Post ***
