5 Mar 1862 - in 'The Morning Post' it was reported under the heading 'Bankrupts' that John Cox, Great Prescott Street, beer retailer was to surrender to the court on 19 March 1862 at 11.a.m. (The function of the surrender process in bankruptcy is to permit a debtor the ability to give up property he owns that is subject to a lien and outstanding loan. Through the surrender process, when the creditor receives the property back, the debtor is relieved of any further obligation for the debt. The release of any further obligation occurs upon a surrender in bankruptcy even if the value of the property returned is not sufficient to cover the outstanding balance on the loan.) *
