A relative, Jonas Chaplin, 40 born in Wingfield Suffolk was innkeeper with his family here in 1851. It may be of interest that Abedgno Chaplin who was Charlie Chaplins grandfather lived only a door or two away; however we have no link yet between the families.

Jonas Chaplin then moved to london.
He has provided some interesting snippets :
A newspaper search found an article re Jonas Chaplin in Nov 25th 1859 when he was stabbed twice and seriously injured. He is listed as a commission agent in the coal trade. He was hospitalised. The witness says he was talking to the accused in another language, the accused was polish. the attacker was jailed in jan 1860 for six months. the trial appears on the old bailey website. He was arrested and in debtors jail in 1861 where he was still a commission agent for coal trade.
In the 1871 census he was beer house keeper of the Army & Navy Public Hotel in [Plaistow] West Ham. just after the houses in valentine terrace with his wife Mary. In 1871 a directory lists Jonas Chaplin, beer retailer Church Street.
He died in 1874 at West Ham. *
