PAKEFIELD is a parish and village, in Mutford and Lothingland incorporation and
hundred, Lowestoft county court district, Lothingland rural deanery,
archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, a mile and a half
south-west from Lowestoft, 12 miles from Yarmouth, 9 from Beceles, and 22 from
Saxmundham. The church of All Saints is an old building, with thatched roof,
square tower, embattled, which contains 4 bells: nave and aisle, and a porch on
the south side. The register dates from 1680. The living is a rectory; the
tithes are commuted at £180 per annum, with 14 acres of glebe laud, in the gift
of the Church Patronage Society, said held by the Rev. John Sandys, M.A., of
Queen's College, Cambridge; the Rev. John Edwin Sandys, B.A., is curate. Henry
Reeve, Esq., is lord of the manor, and James Peto, Esq., of Lowestoft, is chief
landowner. This being a very dangerous coast, the Suffolk Humane Society have a
lifeboat here. There is also a lighthouse on the coast. The sea has made
considerable encroachments on this coast. The Society of Friends have a
meeting-house at this place. There is a National school for boys and girls,
supported by the rector and a small weekly payment by the scholars. Here are two
charities, and some allotments of land to the poor, which let for £20 per annum,
and which is distributed in coals annually. The population in 1861 was 768, and
the area is 771 acres.
