PAKENHAM is a parish, in Thingoe union, Thedwestry hundred, county court
district of Bury St. Edmund's, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury, and
diocese of Ely, West Suffolk; a mile and a half north from Thurston station, 92
from London, and 2 south from Ixworth. The church is named St. Mary's. The
living is a vicarage, valued in 1835 at £281, with residence, in the patronage
of, and held by, the Rev. Charles Wm. Jones, M.A., of Caius College, Cambridge.
The tithes were commuted in 1841 for a yearly modus of £908 2s., about
two-thirds of which belong to the Rev. Walter John Spring Casborne, M.A., J.P.,
who is lay impropriator of the rectory and owner of the delightfully situated
residence and mansion, New House, in this parish.
A National school was built in 1842, with a house for the master, now educating
about 120 children. The population in 1861 was 1,180, and the area is 3,096
acres.
