Poslingford 1865 Post Office Directory

POSLINGFORD is a village and parish, in Risbridge hundred and union, Haverhill county court district, rural deanery of Clare, archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 2 ½ miles north-east from Clare. The church (dedication unknown) is a small structure, and was restored and re-seated in 1852. The living, a discharged vicarage, has 9 acres of glebe and a yearly rent-charge of £100, awarded in 1841, in the gift of T. H. Elwes, Esq., and held by the Rev. W. L. Suttaby, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge. In this parish are the remains of an
old abbey, called Chipley Abbey, the property of the infant son of Captain Dashwood, now occupied as a farmhouse. The abbey land is tithe free, and the owner receives small moduses in lieu of tithes from owners within the boundary. Samuel Ware, Esq., is lord of the manor. The population in 1861 was 350, and the area is 2,438 acres; the soil is chiefly clay, and the crops arc wheat, barley, oats and beans.
