Britannia, 279 Mare Street, Hackney

Hackney Index

Mare Street was originally called Church Street. It was first established as the Britannia in 1790 and was rebuilt in the 1850s. By 1983, the pub had been re-named Mr Pepys and was later called the Samuel Pepys, before closing and being demolished in 2000 as part of the refurbishment of the Hackney Empire, which has existed next door since the 1880s. A third version of the pub was then built, opening in October 2004. This has been named the Marie Lloyd Bar, and is shown in a November 2006 photograph. During all this time, the street numbering has varied slightly from time to time, but the site has been the same. **
