My great uncle, George Holford first appears in the phone book at the Duke of Devonshire in 1910 - the same detail as in the Post Office directory. He is listed all the way through until 1940. This is quite remarkable as he died on 28th December 1928! However the site shows that his widow continued as the licensee (Ellen Louise Holford). She remarried (third marriage) in 1941 and obviously gave up the pub. **

The Duke of Devonshire must have given a good living because he left £5,750 which is the present day equivalent of about £260,000. My dad remembers his uncle as being the affluent business man who overshadowed his own dad (Ernest Holford) who was licensee of less successful pubs.  **
