My grandmother's photo is of her brother, James Robert BULLEN's tavern of
which he was proprietor at the time of his death on 22 July 1909. My
grandmother emigrated to South Australia in 1911 and the photo was one of
her treasured memories of her brother. *
Their father was also James Robert BULLEN who was a beer retailer at 228
Devonshire Street, Mile End Old Town, from around 1880 (1881 Census) until
his death 1886. [ref. probate records].
His wife Charlotte Martha BULLEN then took over the business until shortly
before her death in March 1901. *
James Robert BULLEN (1860-1909) learnt the business from his parents, first
being at 39 Upper North Street, Poplar (Sir John Barleycorn) in the 1891
census; at 157 Chobham Road, Stratford (Eagle) in the 1901 Census; and
finally the St. Pauls Tavern 72 Villa Street, Walworth, until 22 July 1909 -
probate records. *
1910/James Robert Bullen/../../../Post Office Directory [Always out of
date!] ****
In 1911 his wife Matilda Mary BULLEN was running the
Rose at 78 Edmund Street, Camberwell
along with her son, also James Robert BULLEN (1888 - 1976), who was the
barman & licensed victualler. I have since found him at the Britannia, 94
Ironmonger Row, St Luke in 1915. He had moved to Winchester, Hampshire by
1917 and remained there, presumably still in the pub business. *
