The Pidgeon family of Kenton, Devon

All information supplied by Ian Pidgeon.

A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in  London. The  London listing uses information from census, Trade Directories and History to add licensees, bar staff, Lodgers and Visitors.

In the late 19th century many members of the Pidgeon family of Kenton, Devon moved to London, where several of them became beer house keepers, beer retailers and licensed victuallers. Many of these publicans were husbands of the women of the Pidgeon family, and their descendants, so that the name of Pidgeon doesn’t appear very often. They were all descendants of Joseph Pidgeon and Mary Cossey. Two of their sons, John and Charles moved to Ashburton, Devon. Following are the children and grandchildren of Joseph and Mary who were born in Devon and involved in running London pubs:

Mary, (1828–1873) married Henry Payne

Charlotte, (1830–1894) married (1) William Bennett, (2) John Hope Turner senior

Emma, (1840–1927) married (1) Charles Tucker, (2) Henry Payne, (3) Theo Redstall

Mary Ann Tucker (daughter of Emma), (1865–1905) married William Creeden

Emma (daughter of John), (1855–1892) married Thomas Gundry

Emily (daughter of John), (1868-1906) married (1) William Charles Hadden, (2) John McCarthy

John (son of Charles), (1858–1944) married Rosina Jane Farleigh

Emma Jane (daughter of Charles), (1862–1930) married (1) Thomas Cox, (2) William Creeden

William (son of Charles), (1865–?) married Nellie Jane Thompson

Henry (son of Charles), (1874–1905) married Maria Bull

Lucy Caroline (daughter of Charles), (1876–1947) married Joseph Creeden (daughter of William Creeden and Mary Ann Tucker)
